Hebrews 4:1-11-- To Enter That Rest

Scripture: Hebrews 4:1-11

Have you ever created something?

Of course you have. We all make things all the time. I guess what I mean is, have you ever really created something? There are many different kinds of masterpieces: songs, stories, pictures, woodwork, math proofs (trust me), meals (I'll trust you)...

I think it's part of bearing God's image to enjoy the creative process. And while that process may look very different for each of us, the last step is usually the same. Stepping back, beholding the finished work, and contentedly entering 'rest'. It seems to me that enjoying the fruit of our work, and sharing it with others, is perhaps the best step of the process.

Think of the moment of 'rest' you had at the end of your greatest masterpiece.

Now imagine that, instead of creating whatever it is you just remembered, you had created a universe. A huge, expanding cosmos abounding in space, light, energy, life, and even sentient, rational, moral life!

How awesome would that rest be?!

God has invited us to join Him in His rest. "The promise of entering His rest still stands." By God's grace, the mechanisms of entering that rest are belief and faith. "Now we who have believed enter that rest."

What is it like to join God in beholding, with amazement, who He is and all that He's done? It's peaceful. "Anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his works, just as God did from His." There is no promise that strife, struggles, and setbacks will cease, but their power is weakened when you join the 'rest' of the One whose power made the heavens.

"There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God."
